Consumer champions – in a league of their own

Champion at the bit for reader wins

The UK is rubbish nowadays at producing successful Eurovision Song Contest entries, but leaves the rest of the continent standing when it comes to churning out newspaper consumer champions.

Seriously. Try finding a financial agony aunt or uncle in Le Figaro, or Il Sore 24 Ore, or Die Welt. Any luck? If yes, you’re a better rootler than me.

UK newspapers by contrast, and especially at the weekends, are chock-a-block with just such formidable individuals.

While readers munch idly on their croissants, our heroes are splashed across the page taking up cudgels on behalf of consumers either left out-of-pocket, or on the end of shoddy service from inept financial services and other providers.

With that in mind, it’s congratulations to Katie Morley, The Telegraph Money section’s newly-appointed consumer champion.

Katie Morley Investigates… replaces a similar column from the redoubtable Jessica Gorst-Williams, who recently stepped down from a 20-year stint in the role at the Telegraph Media Group.

I don’t know Katie terribly well, although I’ve kept quarter-of-an-eye on her progress down the years. Why? Because her first job as a financial journalist was on the Financial Times’ Pensions Week magazine (now Pensions Expert) in 2011. Having launched the title back in 1997, I’m always intrigued about the career paths taken by former inmates.

If The Telegraph’s Saturday and Sunday double-dose of KMI isn’t for you, then The Times on Saturday runs its ‘Troubleshooter’ column currently written by Annabelle Williams.

Meanwhile, The Sunday Times features Jill Insley’s ‘Question of Money’, The Observer offers readers ‘Your problems’ care of Anna Tims, and the Mail on Sunday serves up a weekly instalment of ‘Tony Hetherington investigates‘.

Interestingly, it looks like Katie’s going to keep count of how much her column wins back for readers.

I’m not sure rival newspapers would be inclined to focus quite so bluntly, or solely, on monies recouped.

But when you read that KMI’s running total is £103,064 in the first week, it’s not a surprising tack for the paper to take.
